🇳🇬 [21 March 2025] NHRC announces plans for AI guidelines and other initiatives: It is reported that at a recent workshop on the human rights implications of AI governance in Africa, Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, has announced plans that the NHRC will (1) develop guidelines that ensure that AI systems are developed and deployed in ways that respect and protect human rights, in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Nigeria’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights; (2) set up a dedicated unit within its Legal Services and Enforcement Department to monitor the effects of AI on human rights and to establish redress mechanisms; and (3) facilitate collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, academia, and civil society on the above. Executive Secretary Ojukwu also stressed the importance of Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) in AI development, urging tech companies to conduct impact assessments, enforce compliance, and provide accessible avenues for individuals whose rights may be affected by AI applications.
