The key standout item is that open source AI has moved into a signed multilateral commitment with the adoption of the Chengdu Statement on 24 July at the APEC Ministerial Meeting on Digital Economy and Artificial Intelligence, hosted in China. It was signed by all 21 APEC economies including the United States and China. It calls on members to support the development of open source AI models and projects, which is an affirmative commitment rather than a shared observation, and the chair described it as the first APEC AI agreement to reach ministerial cooperation on open source.
